We run Damara / Merino cross ewes, which we are developing into a line of sheep that do not require shearing. The ewes will be crossed with a Dorper ram. We decided to abandon wool and high maintenance Merinos as the return, when it is all worked out, is negligible and to peruse lower maintenance animals.

The meat off the Damara and Dorper is far superior to the traditional British style of crossbred lamb. It does not have the pungent aroma of most lamb and the fat is not like candle wax. As well as this, because the animal stores most of its fat in its tail, the meat is generally lean.

The Boer cross goats are an alternative to sheep, being a low maintenance animal. The goat market is slowly developing in Australia (goat meat is the most widely eaten meat in the world) with the introduction of the Boer breed, giving more numbers and a consistent product.

With the change to browsing types of animals, it has been evident that the country is not being eaten into the ground now as was the case with Merinos, with different pasture and native species being more evident.
